'Listen, Learn and be Happy Together'

School Council

Role of the School Council

Everybody’s views, ideas and opinions matter.

During the Autumn term all classes hold elections in their class for a School Council representative to join the Communication Team. The child elected will then meet at least half termly to discuss and share pupil’s views from their classes.

The Head Boy and Head Girl, who are elected by the children and staff, will also participate in School Council and play an important role in School events.

Our new Smart School Council

We have joined an exciting project called Smart School Councils where the key ethos is that every child has a voice and any idea is worth sharing.

  • School council meetings are held in every classroom which means every child’s voice is heard
  • Even if children aren’t on the Communication Team, they still have the opportunity to make a difference by joining an Action Team enabling them to lead change.
  • Action teams explore the feasibility of introducing change, giving ownership of projects to the children.

To find out more, you can visit Smart School Councils here: https://home.smartschoolcouncils.org.uk/ At Walworth, we believe that everyone’s voice is important, we want to ensure that we are listening and responding to the voice of pupils.  Our Smart School Council is helping our young people to:

  • Learn to work together
  • Learn about democracy and pupil voice
  • Learn how to play a positive role in our community It is for everyone in our school, helping pupils to:
  • Find things they want to change
  • Come up with ways to make them better
  • Put those ideas into action
  • See what works (evaluating)

We involve every voice by…

  • Every class has a meeting
  • Questions topics are decided by a team of young people called the Communication Team with the help of the lead teacher
  • A different person runs the meeting each time (with help from the teacher if they need it).
  • A different person takes notes each time (with help from the teacher if they need it)

Our staff commit to:

  • Make sure meetings happen when they are supposed to.
  • Support pupils to run meetings.
  • The Headteacher will communicate with the council.
