Election Fever Grips Walwarth

4th April 2016 By Admin Linda

Election fever hit Walworth this week.  All pupils and staff being involved in selecting a Head Boy and Head Girl from our year 6 children.

With the country gripped in discussion about  EU membership, Walworth children have been looking at the components of an election and democracy as a whole in selecting peers for these two important positions. All the nominated children gave their addresses to the whole school as to why they should be chosen. The children did fantastically well speaking confidently and precisely about their qualities.

Each class has discussed democracy at their levels of understanding and how important they are in the process. Within school children make choices at many points during the year, but this election brought the whole school together in a meaningful purpose to select children for these important roles. The successful pupils will be involved in meeting parents and visitors in school, showing them around and answering questions. Another role will be their involvement in being part of the decision making process for new employees to our school. These are important roles as the children will represent all the values we support as a whole school. They will represent visitors first view of Walworth and give a pupil`s view of any potential new employee.

After all the votes were counted the successful Head Boy was James O  and the successful Head Girl in the election was Ellie C. Both of the successful candidates gave an acceptance speech to the school thanking them for their support. The Chair Of Governors, who attended the election result, commented that clearly both young people were delighted to be chosen and he looked forward to meeting them when he comes into school.

Active Listening Sessions for Children

1st February 2016 By Admin Linda

The school is developing a provision to further support and promote our children’s emotional health and well-being. Walworth School provides ‘wrap around’ care in which we want children to feel safe, secure and able to talk to a trusting adult when they need to talk. The National Minimum Standard 2.2 states: ‘the school identify a person other than a parent, outside the residential and teaching staff, who children may contact directly about personal problems or concerns at the school’.

Susanne Matthews (PSA) has level 3 training in Active Listening Skills awarded by CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Award Body) and is qualified in this Counselling Therapy Technique. Suzanne will be offering ‘Active Listening Sessions’ to children to help support their emotional wellbeing in areas of low self-esteem, bereavement and loss, managing anger and frustration and any other concerns they may wish to discuss, the list is not exhaustive.

The PSA works within the protocol of Child Protection and Working with Children and Families. Children identified by their class teacher to be experiencing anxiety and emotional distress can be referred to Suzanne as an additional support. Parental consent will be needed before the Active Listening Sessions with a child could begin.

Teachers will be asked to complete a referral form and an initial pre evaluation questionnaire, before the child can engage with the intervention. Once the child has finished engaging in the sessions the class teacher will be given a post evaluation questionnaire to complete. Results from the evaluations and the behaviour monitoring forms will be analysed to determine the outcomes.

The findings and outcomes relating to the effectiveness of the intervention will then be made available.

Note: ‘Active Listening Sessions’ is not an intervention for children who are receiving CAMHS emotional therapeutic work.

Samaritan’s Operation Christmas Child – Shoe Box Appeal 2015

17th December 2015 By viviensowerby

A small shoebox can have a big impact. The children at Walworth School have donated some wonderful gifts for the appeal this year.

We have managed to fill 24 shoe boxes.

These have now been dropped off at our local shoe shop and will be donated to disadvantaged children in other countries.

Well done everyone and a massive thank you to parents and carers for your donations.
